Abused Students

Don't worry about civil rights, due process, academic freedom, or any other basic items at Capella University - plan on leaving all of these things (and more) the moment you pay nearly $2,000 for each class (including those taught by "instructors" who bought their degrees from diploma mills).

True Stories About Students Abused at Capella University

List of Abused Students Obtained from the United States Department of Education

Be sure to take a good look at the following list, obtained from the United States Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR) under the Freedom of Information Act. As part of that request, OCR was asked to remove any names that should not be released to the public: therefore, this document (that was originally produced by Capella University) appears exactly as received from OCR.

Chart of Abused Students

For a "translation" of terms used in this chart, please refer to our Capella-Speak page.

While the full details of these so-called disciplinary actions are not known, we would like to comment on each of them below (listed 1, 2, and 3 in their respective order from the top of the chart):

  1. The "learner [isn't that a STUPID term for a student?!] allegedly behaved inappropriately during several residential colloquia." Hmmm...isn't it also true that a couple of faculty members, including a former dean, from Capella University's School of Psychology were also engaged in some sort of sexual misconduct at Capella? Students, . . . oops "learners" spend an ENORMOUS amount of money to flying to a "colloquia" only to be ignored while some of the Capella employees who are allegedly supposed to be running the show, play "kissy-kissy." Perhaps the student learner mentioned here was merely emulating the behavior being modeled by Capella administrators?! Regardless, Capella must have a very interesting School of Psychology!
  2. While only one "learner" from the "School" of Education is mentioned on this chart, the attached interview of Jim Wold, "Executive Director" of the "School" of Education, notes TWO different students who were subjected to adverse actions by Capella. As noted above, the first "learner was upset with [the] course instructor. Postings were disrespectful and anger-filled against [the] instructor and course material." Perhaps this could really be translated that say student had the integrity to stand up to yet another incompetent "professor" - one who may have been absent from the course room, who ignored students, who couldn't write a syllabus if his/her life depended upon, etc. Furthermore, as the attached document demonstrates, it would also appear as if the esteemed "instructor" for this course was completely unable to deal with course room discussions. The chart then states that "mediation was attempted between learner and faculty. Learner was requested to remove offending posts. She did not and withdrew." In other words, this student probably had too much integrity to stand up to the bullying she must have received at Capella. As far as the second student (mentioned on the attached document) is concerned, that one simply told Capella University to stuff it. Based upon the other horrors presented on this site, we don't blame her as she got out while she could. Besides, she probably had too much integrity for Capella.
  3. The "learner [oh, PLEASE stop using that term!] violated comportment in PSY7022 and in emails [sic] to staff/CEO." Oh, God please don't let it be true?! A student complains about incompetence to Capella's CEO? Shocking! While the chart doesn't mention which wuss of a "CEO" was involved - Capella has two - good 'ole Michael Offerman, President and CEO of Capella "University" and/or Stephen Shank, Chairman and CEO, Capella Education Company [also] Chancellor, Capella University, we can only speculate the real problem. (BTW, Stevey was also once the Grand Pubah of Tonka Toys). Apparently one or both of these little boys were probably too busy whining about the big bad "learner" who had a legitimate complaint that it interfered with playing with their Tonka's. Boo, hoo! Mean "learner," mean - Bad "learner!"

Students Abused by the School of Psychology

Unlike some of Capella's other "Schools," the School of Psychology has a standing "Academic Standards Committee" (Kangaroo Court) to abuse any students that don't kowtow to the whims of Capella's Thought Police. In a document released by the United States Department of Education, under the Freedom of Information Act, the School of Psychology's latest "Executive Director," Jim Weiss, states that (at least) two students have been subjected to inquisitions in the past. These include:

  • "One student [became] angry over financial aid issues [and] posted a very inappropriate message in a course room directed tows a University staff member." Even though that student only posted a "single message", he/she was subjected to the School of Psychology's Kangaroo Court and was placed "on academic warning for the remainder of the quarter." The thing to remember about Capella University is that all postings in your courses, no matter how innocuous (or valid) those statements may be, are subject to Capella's Though Police!
  • A second incident in which a male student allegedly flirted with a female student at one of the School of Psychology's conferences. While the details of this case are not fully known, the male student allegedly told the female student something to the effect of "I could kill you and they would never find your body." (Isn't that nice?!?!?!) While the interview of Bruce Weiss doesn't provide a lot of information (and, in light of the fact that Capella University is run by a bunch of liars), it's hard to know what, exactly to believe. Regardless, "the accused student [was] placed on academic warning and restricted in his dealing [sic] with other students. Specifically, the student was to avoid any contact with female students outside of classrooms at future conferences and to avoid unsupervised events with female students." What disappoints us most; however, is Jim Weiss' failure to discuss that hanky-panky between Capella faculty and employees at the School of Psychology's conferences! Is it true, Jim, that part of the reason for the School of Psychology's high turnover your school's "Executive Directors" and others at Capella are too busy with each other (instead of the students that Capella University wants to chaperone) at these events? Sounds like the makings of a great new soap opera! Heck, we'll even suggest a name for it! How about "Copulation at Capella Conferences: The Behind the Scenes Happening at a For-Profit University?" Sounds like a winner to us!
